.
Charles Kennedy above, resigned as Lib-Dem Leader today with immediate effect and says he will not now stand in the forth-coming Leadership contest which he called for only yesterday.
.
It is widely believed his resignation was prompted by a letter, detailing a vote of no-confidence in his leadership from somewhere in the region of 25 of his senior MPs.
.
They are understood to have threatened "either you quit or we will". So Kenedy will step out of the leadership Lib-Dem party, knives in his back having given it 62 MPs - more than any at any point since 1923.
.
As this editor commented to VBS blog corospondent 'Night-watchman' (see link) only this time last week. A ploiticians oposition can be found in oposing parties - one enemies are (mostly) in the same party.
.
The left of British politics has now become very crowded. More analysis to follow early next week.
