The Sunday Quote No. 138

The Sunday Quote:
.
''Before we voted in the European Parliament, there was some bad news. The Commission stated that, even if MEP's did vote to remove all references to natural sunlight, any such amendment could not possibly be accepted.''
.
Philip Bushill-Matthews MEP writing in First Voice of Business, Dec/Jan edition, published by the Federation of Small Businesses.
.
The vote referred to was on an amendment proposed by the Conservative MEP, to the so called 'sunshine directive'. The Commission had proposed that a piece of existing health and safety legislation should be 'strengthened to include the requirement that all businesses would have to monitor the daily radiation from the sun.'
.
The vote, on the amendment, was won by a majority of 60. The EU commission eventually agreed to the amendment, but were not obliged to do so.
.
Democracy (EU style) in action.
